About Kedarnath and Tungnath
Kedarnath Temple is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand and is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is considered one of the four sacred Char Dhams of Hinduism and is also part of the Panch Kedar. According to mythological stories, after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas wanted to atone ( Prayaschit karna ) for their sins ( paap ) and set out in search of Lord Shiva. Angry with them,
Lord Shiva hid in Kedarnath, taking the form of a bull (Nandi). When the Pandavas recognized him, Lord Shiva dived into the earth, leaving behind his hump, which is worshipped in the temple. The name “Kedar” is derived from one of Lord Shiva’s names, and the other parts of his body are worshipped in the other Panch Kedar temples.
Among the Panch Kedar temples, one of the important ones is Tungnath, where the arms of Lord Shiva are worshipped. Tungnath is the highest of the Panch Kedar temples, located at an altitude of about 3,680 meters (12,073 feet) above sea level in the Garhwal Himalayas. It is considered the highest Shiva temple in the world. The temple is believed to be over 1,000 years old and is known for its ancient architecture and serene surroundings.
Tungnath is also a popular trekking destination, with a moderate trek of about 4 kilometers from Chopta, which is often referred to as the “Mini Switzerland of India” due to its stunning natural beauty. The trek to Tungnath offers breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba. The temple is open to pilgrims during the summer months, and the trek is especially popular among adventure enthusiasts and spiritual seekers.
In addition to its religious significance, Tungnath is also known for its spiritual ambiance and the tranquility it offers to those who visit. The peaceful surroundings, combined with the spiritual energy of the temple, make Tungnath a unique and powerful pilgrimage site.
